I believe the best medicine for an overwhelmed soul is neither a glass of wine nor a shopping spree (although those things temporarily help every now and then). But no Cabernet Sauvignon or designer handbag can remedy the soul like God’s word can.
Last night, when I sat down to write a blog post, I was so overwhelmed with other things happening in life that I couldn’t focus on the task at hand. Instead of powering through like I normally do, I really felt God telling me to step back and devote myself to meditate on His word instead. So that’s what I’m doing today. I’m meditating on these 10 verses for the overwhelmed spirit. If you’re feeling frenzied today, I want to invite you to take a break and do the same.
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8 (ESV)
The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. Psalm 34:17 (NLT)
From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety. Psalm 61:2 (NLT)
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV)
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 (NLT)
“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.” John 14:1 (NLT)
But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)
“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:26 (ESV)
For you are my hiding place; you protect me from trouble. You surround me with songs of victory. The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. Psalm 32:7-8 (NLT)
Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Psalm 62:5 (NIV)

Gosh, I love Psalm 61:2… it expresses everything I need from Him when overwhelmed… love all of these! Will be sharing with the teen girls group I help run! They need these for the new season!

I needed to see this post! I am feeling overwhelmed and anxious this week dealing with a tooth abscess and possible future extraction, and preparing for my annual physical which for me is normally not a big deal as I have been blessed with good health. My issue is my fear of doctors and the fact that this is a new doctor who I never met before. This fear causes my blood pressure to sky rocket. I am already feeling anxious and I still have a week to go!
I saw a post by Gari Meacham which said that all fear takes place in the mind. She shared the verse to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. So very true.
My life verse born out of a tendency to anxiety is Deuteronomy 31:8 I go before you and am with you. I will never leave you or forsake you.
Thanks for sharing. I have been greatly encouraged. 🙂

Many of these verses are among my favorites. I also love John 16: 33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
